Sidechaining... How do you do it?        Go on top to this Page

Hello, fellow Psycledelics!

I've been using LMMS for a little while, and have recently started using Psycle because LMMS doesn't work too well with VSTs. One thing I haven't found anywhere is how to sidechain (like this). I'm sure I could do it manually with tweaking, although I'd like to know how to do it automatically.

If anyone can help me out, that'd be great!

Psycle does not support interaction between machines right now.
The only exception to this rule is the note duplicator, but its functionality is limited to resend what it receives.

Said that, the example is a bit strange. That's the function of a compressor. I assume it's just that, an example, and that the intention is to show how to control a control from an envelope.

You can semi-automate envelopes using the popup menu Interpolate "curve". That generates some tweaks from a free form envelope that you can define.

To use it, select the track where the tweaks will be written (you need to select the rows so that it knows the length), click interpolate curve, and it will show a dialog with a draggable line and options to configure the range.

Hi UltimateRiff:

Psycle 1.10.1 introduces the multi-IO support what implies that you can use VSTs with multiple inputs and/or outpus. Right now the native Psycle plugin interface has no support for multi-IO.

Working with dynamics is basically working with volume level. So we can do it in Psycle in two ways:

1st) Working with Psycle plugins or VSTs that doesn't support sidechaining: As JAZ said, you can automate volume changes tweaking the volume of the desired instrument (chain), or even you can use volume modulation effect plugins like the Psycle native ''dw-tremolo.dl'' plugin. You can listen the Psycle demo song ''Psycle Tutorial - Dynamics_Limiter.psy'' where the sidechained pad (from instruments 07.Phantom and 09.Feedme) is emulated by using this plugin according to each bassdrum beat. Mute everything but instruments 07 and 09 to listen clearly this effect.

2nd) There are free sidechain compressor plugins out there (i.e.
Slide Chain Compressor for stereo VST plugin by Slim Slow Slider) with Multi-IO support. So you only need to route each stereo signal source in the channel mapping. If you want I could upload a demo for you to test this way.

I hope this explanation will be of help for you.

I use an old freeware version of SideKick VST, which supports multiple interacting instances in Psycle, see whether it works for you: http://nenavist.wz.cz/SideKickv3.dll

Thanks for all the help, however, the VSTs you guys (Angelus and Corwex) linked show up as, "Non-working or not a machine" (a demo/tutorial might help). However, if I can't get those working, I'll probably just interpolate a curve for it.

Also, where would I get the demo songs? I've looked around the site, but I couldn't find anything.

If they show as not working, it might be one of two things:

- they are not in the vst dir, but on the plugins dir
- you use the 64bit version without a bridge.

About the demo songs, they are installed into the public/shared folder instead of the user one.

I know that's a bit confusing sometimes...

Windows 7: C:\Users\Public\Documents
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents

Yeah, that was my problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction for the demos too!

If I remember correctly, Sidekick must be installed, and not only "dll copied" to the VST folter. It stopped working for me because I reinstalled Psycle and just copied my VST folder to the new installation.

Someone posted a PSY side chaining demo using Sidekick, some time ago. It uses 2 instances of the plugin. I can send it to you, if you're interested.

I never reinstaled it because I do all my side chaining manually, using a gainer native plugin. I automate it in a way bass and/or eveything ducks to the kick. (similar to Angelus tip).

Hi UltimateRiff :

I've performed a little tune to test sidechain in Psycle. You can download the test file from [THIS LINK]. The pack contains the plugin I've used in this test file. You only need to copy the .dll file into your VST (x86) folder (Take a look at the settings window to see the configured route).

The test file has 4 patterns:
- 1st one plays the tune without sidechain (yes, it's from Michael Jackson's Billy Jane)
- 2nd one plays only the bass.
- 3th one plays the tune with sidechain compression over the bass
- 4th one plays only the bass with sidechain compression to notice the sidechain effect.

Take a look at the channel mapping window of both sidechain compressor effect incoming wires from machines [00: Drum2.5] (the bassdrum) and [01:Sublime] (the bass).

I hope it will be of help for you.
