new track        Go on top to this Page

i've added an untitled jungle/dnb type track
http://www.mediafire.com/?faxb8b4s47s7gkn

made with psycle 1.8.6
uses arguru comp (apparently not available in psycle1.10, that i have on my laptop
also uses synth 1

i invite people if that want, to redo this track. i'm not convinced by the bass and 'tune' parts especially, so i would be interested in other people's better ideas.

Hi liquid boy:

I was playing a bit with your song. I've uploaded a version with some mixing/eq/compression ideas. You can download it following [THIS LINK].

Basically this is what I've done:
- Some Eq in some instruments (chords, hats) to remove low frequencies (<60-120Hz) that aren't needed. It will create space for the bass.
- Some Eq for the bassdrum, cutting some very low frequencies and giving some resonance in ~110Hz to give more punch. I've delayed a bit the BD to "humanize" it and give presence to the hats.
- Added a NewYork compressor in the send/return mixer to improve the punch in drums (bassdrum, snare, hats)
- Added a flanger and a delay to the machine "06:chords" chain to improve its stereo perception.
- Added a exciter to the "00:melody" machine chain, to give it more presence and brightness.
- Reduced overall volume levels for all the incoming wires before the mixer. You must to try to mix your songs at low volume level (avoid peaking the yellow zone of the vu-meters in the mixer). In the mastering step you will do all the work to improve the loudness.
- And finally, the bass: I've centered it in the middle of the stereo with a dw-iopan instance (Bass shouldn't be panned) and added an exciter (fuzz filter in pooplog's filter is a great one for basses) to improve its perception.
- I've added a simple mastering chain with some eq and a limiter.

Now I always add a M/S processor (voxengo MSED) and a frequency analyzer (voxengo SPAN). They are really helpful to improve the sound of the mix.

The song would need more work to achieve better results but I hope my ideas are to your's liking.

Ops! I've forgotten to upload the right version in the previous post. The linked psy file is now the right one. I've added some casual subbassdrums, typically used in this music genre.

hey that's great, thanks for the ideas.

certainly sounds different. will give me lots to work on

had to listen on my laptop through my stereo, as apparently .psy files saved from new versions of psycle, when loaded in pscyel 1.8.6, all machines are corrupted and are replaced with dummy plugins

I'm pleased that my mix will give you some ideas.

I'm not an usual "consumer" of this kind of music so I can't give you ideas about the structure of your song, but I was adding some elements:

-Added cymbals and Reverse cymbals
-Added stereo to the shakers to improve its perception using an instance of koruz plugin.
-Added a basic M/S processor between master_eq and master_limiter to improve the overall stereo perception of the stereo elements. Lower the MID_iopan output wire volume to listen what sounds in stereo. Lower the SIDE_dummy output wire volume to listen what sounds in the center of the stereo field.

You can listen this add-ons by downloading the psy file in [THIS LINK], or the mp3 version in [THIS LINK]

I hope it will be of help for you.

Nice track! Good use of Psycle machines!

Also, I've learned some interesting thinks about Psycle native machines I never used before!

I'm still working on this tune. It's really funny.

I've uploaded another version with the following changes+adds:
- Removed the reverb plugin from Cymbal&Rev chain and putted it as Return 2 in the mixer, so it can be shared with the snare, the chords and the melody inputs with different send values. This strategy allows us to use just one reverb plug for different instruments (CPU economy).
- Automated the percentage for snare in Send 1 to NYCompressor. Goto pattern 10:loud and open the mixer to see how it works. It will make the snare to sound more "humanized" with different compression values. It sounded too "plain" (IMHO).
- I've performed a transition for the bass between the end of pattern 0A:withbass to the pattern 0B:nobass. It ended too much suddenly (IMHO).
- Some small changes in the SIDE equalization and mixer NYcompressor sends.
- Some changes in hihats and openhihats from pattern 10.

I hope this will be of your's liking.

The_Brainwashed: Psycle has much more hidden power than we can imagine. That's why I started a set of tutorials about Psycle and its native plugins. Maybe the number of its plugins is too limited but they are really a must.

Ooops! (again)

I've forgotten to comment another change:
- I've modified the value of the VCA attack in chords and the length of the attack plus release times of compressors to a multiple of the length of BPM in milliseconds. I usually do this so instruments are coordinated with the overall rhythm of the song. To do this, you must to divide 60000 (milliseconds for 1 minute) by the BPM value and it will give you the time in milliseconds of one beat. If you want to know how much time takes 1 line, you must to divide the time for 1 beat by the number of lines per beat in your song.
- I've forgotten too to tell you that if you just want to listen what's processed by NYcompressor and Reverb machines in the mixer, you can press its respective solo button. It's really helpful to improve their input levels.

Thanks for sharing.

Angelus: Yes, Psycle is a beast of power! And it's really nice to discover a hidden feature!

I was specially interested in your exciter and iopan methods. To be honest I never used these plugins before, since I use most VST instruments and effects.

Also, the mixer is a little voodoo to me, and I never understood it. I usually use a complex wire net, in order to have different amounts of reverb, delay and other FX for each track bit. Sometimes it's impossible, and I must load more than one instance of the FX, increasing the CPU use drastically. I'll study your techiques and will try to put it to work for me.

Is the new version at the same link of your post above?

I hope Liquid Boy doesn't bother for me hijacking his thread.

The_Brainwashed: I'm really pleased that my ideas are useful for you. Sometimes we are (over)focused on VSTs, but I encourage all of you to play with Psycle machines. Think in Psycle machines as basic algorithms that will make your sound go further.

It's really worth to understand and use all the features of the Psycle mixer too. You can really improve your song in terms of CPU economy, usability and workspace.

Yes, the latest version is the one linked above, or following
[THIS LINK]
