Better Mixes In Psycle (For Beginning Psyclers)


Wanna make music that sounds better than a toy piano ? I don't mean to insult anyone - and I realize that we all have to start somewhere (my tracks used to sound like that) - but I've heard a lot of music here by Psyclers that could sound really good with just some simple processing help



!!!! PSYCLE CAN DO IT !!!!



Here's basically my default set-up:

Mixers (use them!!!)
3 sub mixers feeding 1 Main Output mixer.
- 1.Drums, 2.Intruments, 3.Pads
- Each mixer has it's own fx (Reverb, Chrs, more as needed).
- The overall balance can be easily tweaked this way.
- Also have an FX on main mixer in case.


Output Chain - THE IMPORTANT PART.
- From the Main Mixer to:
1.A Bass-Cut EQ (Mine is AO Parametric EQ), then
2.A Mix Compressor (eg. Classic Compressor)
3.More Overall EQ (Leftover Lasagne from PushTec), then
4.A Master Limiter (I use CLASSIC Limiter), then
5.Something to VIEW the output (Inspector, SPAN), then
6.Connect to the Master Machine (One Channel Only)


Samples (?):
- I haven't used very many samples in tunes. If I use
them I run them from a sample player plugin and connect
that to the appropriate mixer. That's probably
wrong ?! but it works for me. I don't live in SampleLand.

* Clipping kills. When you use a master limiter you won't
have to worry about clipping at all (and Psycle graciously
knocking the volume down for you).

Once you get a rig set up that works o.k.: SAVE IT.
You can always tweak / change it as you go. Start your
next tune using that as a template.

Free VST Plugins move around a lot on the internet so the
best I can suggest is that when you find something that
works: hold on to it. If you can afford to buy them,
great. I can't. And I'm not knocking the native plugs;
I just don't normally use them (but my guess is they're
not as CPU-hungry and more stable than the others)


I have not had to do ANY post processing in a wave editor
so far. Psycle/VST's do all the work for me. Of course if you
push it too hard you'll have to back off somewhere. Your
PC will tell you when it's had enough. I also use the
ASIO4ALL sound driver on a basic on-board sound card.


Sorry, I don't have any example tracks posted 'cuz I haven't
felt like dealing with that yet.

few additionals:

use sidechaining, specially when you work with an offbeat bass. Helps ALOT to avoid muddiness in low end.

Sidekick is a free plugin doing it quite nicely [ URL ]

Use your EQ (when you can) in a dynamic way. whenever lotsa frequences fight for presence, cut on the part which is less audible or requires to be less audible.

Clean up your mix. I use to put in lotsa stuff at the same time, which mostly only I hear. Get a friend to listen. Ask him if he was hearing that, ie, heavily highpassed pad. If he doesnt hear it - trash it.

Speaking bout high freqs:
Set ur hihat samples mono. Pan em slightly left/right. Frees up some space in the mix and doesnt get overwidened by any stereo enhancer u use.

A few more:

Don't clutter one frequency too much With your EQ you can clear up frequency ranges to make instruments sound clearer

Use stereo panning, move stuff around to the right and left. This clears up the center for your lead and bass.

People keep saying "don't try to master at your home", but it's a lot of fun to polish our tracks before exporting to WAV. And you can LEARN a lot about the mastering work, even if you're using free plugins. So, when you'll be about to release your track to a huge audience, you'll understand how a mastering engineer works. Reading about these techniques can be very interesting, and there's various nice readings on Google Books, for instance.

My "mastering" chain is:

- IIEQ (cut the bass, the upper highs and some 500hz circa freqs)
- Endorphin (or some other multiband compressor or even an amp simulator like Rubytube, to bring some bright or warm, acording to the track)
- Buzzmaxi limiter set at -0.1db

After, for general checking, the chain continues with:

- Inspector (spectrum analyzer)
- s(m)exoscope (from Smartelectronix, it's an osciloscope, to view the waveform. it's very useful to see what your waveform looks like, sometimes)
- Kelly Industries Stereo Tools: to check about mono compatibility

NOTE: also, for stereo checking, it's cool to open that triangle on the final wire on the chain, ir order to see a 180º stereo spread graphic.

Then, to the output.

If done "right" these simple elements can bring some shine to your already awesome tracks.

I just start to make electronic music and also to master my own songs. Therefore i have lot of problems to understand the basic principles. For example i have no idea what a Compressor or a Limiter are and what they do with my sound.
