| Do not pass go, do not collect £200 | |
hello,
I got interested in trackers a few months back and trialled a bunch of them including psycle, buzz, buze renoise and a couple of others. I came to the conclusion that I liked Buzz best BUT...
I think it may have been after I installed Overloader with buzz or one of the other aftermarket addons for buzz that I discovered Psycle does not load anymore.
It comes up and tries to scan my expansive VST (Freeware only) folder then pause about a third of the way through and disappears leaving me and my ugly desktop staring at each other.
Could overloader have installed something which crashes Psycle on startup or might it be something completely different or worse yet, completely unknown?
Please help because I would like to have a crack at learning tracking with Psycle.
Thanks in advance.

I just tried it again now so I can give more detail.
It loads up then starts scanning for VST's
then after a while it says
'testing 9176 VST'
I have a fair amount of VSTs but I don't have any where near 9176 of them,
why would it be locating so many of them?
What is the root of my problem?

There can be several reasons, but more importantly, there's (currently) a limit of 2048 entries in the plugin browser, and going over this limit surely can crash the host (i should have added a check not to excess this limit).
Said that, the number it tells about plugins is the number of .dll files that it finds in the directory (and subdirectories) that you've specified for VST's.
Concretely, it will try to check for every dll in that path, if they are truely a VST or not.
These non-vst dlls can appear:
Helper dll's for the vst's. usually harmless.
Dx/Dxi plugins (sometimes vst plugins install also a DX/DXi variant). Usually harmless too.
System dll's placed in vst's folder ( like msvcr60.dll or so). these can be troublesome. (moving them into windows\system32 is highly recommended)
Anyway, psycle writes into a log each file it loads and can help on finding which one is giving problems.
Concretely this log file is placed in C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name_\.psycle\psycle-plugin-scan.log.txt (Replace "Document and settings" with "Users" if using Vista)
I would first check why it lists so many dlls, and if you really have a high amount of vst's, think on not giving the full path to psycle, due to the limitation i've said above.

Thanks Jaz for the suggestions, I will give a couple of them a go.
I definately do not have 9167 plugins,
probably less than 200.
Cheers,
I will give an update soon.
