Hi all
I'm trying to make a song in time for SD18, trouble is after moving all I have access to is my crappy pair of cheap mp3 player headphones... mix sounds fine on them but from past experience doesn't mean it sounds OK elsewhere... any help about levels, stereo panning, appreciated!

critique the fuck out of it, i want to know if it's worth entering
cheers

In the past, certains things kept me away from making music and the most annoying of them is the self-pressure of having the song to play PERFECTLY on every sound system of the world.
Today, I'm happy if it sounds average good on my stereo speakers, mp3player (mainly, lol ) and crappy cassette mono radio. My productivity simply turn 180º...
Said that, let's check your song out!
1 - Ogg Vorbis seems to keep the audio a lot more intact than MP3. Your song is very clean and the frequencies are in their places.
2 - liked the subtle stereo FX.
3 - liked very much the drum FX at 2:29
I think it's pretty much worth to send this song. Not my kind of sound, but I think it's very interesting and well done!
Now, some questions:
1 - Do U used Psycle to make this song, right?
2 - Do U used some comercial mastering suit to make this song or only free stuff?
I'm asking because I don't know the compo rules.

Thanks for the feedback Brainwashed.

Yup -- Psycle 185RC using the Soundevotion Compo 18 Samplepack for the drums, and also Crystal and Triangle II VSTs. Only a few instances as my computer craps out under the pressure

It's all free stuff, as listed above -- just rendered to wav straight from psycle. AFAIK you're not allowed to do any mastering on the song outside of your chosen program. I'll put the .psy up as well.
You can find the rules here: http://www.sdcompo.com/rules.php

I agree -- it can be a nightmare! Sounding very different from one place to another. I've seen the same problem suffered by graphix people too -- when their work gets printed or resized or something and looks different from how they're used to it -- and they don't like it!

Had a listen on my headphones only and just 2 things to "complain":
Too much low end. The bassdrum and your bassline are fighting each other in the same frequency range.
Maybe cut some lows on you bassdrum. Think that one is not as important as the bassline. You can also cut out all frquencies below 30hz. Nobody can hear it and it may remove some "rumble below".
And, sounds like you have overdone loudness maximation. Looks like you set the output to 0db. In most cases, 0db ain't 0db. Set it somewhere between -0.5 and -0.2 db. That's usually a safe setting. And go lower with your input gain. If you have attenuation displayed, make sure it's not more than 2 - 3 db. That normally works fine. Everything above mostly fucks up everything.
To the track itself: Not my cup of tea but you did some damn nice drumwork (again).
Cheers!

Cheers SAS, good tips. I'll have a try at them later on. I definitely want to learn about production tips like EQ and the like.. I just have no clue at the moment.

Of course it is worth entering. Plus you get a second opportunity at others giving you critique.
I'm a fan of this song. Maybe the bass is too much on some stereos but doesn't bother me on my headphones.
Also the leads that come in around 1:00 are so cool. And they keep going with a great, seemingly random, musical progression.
I think there will be some others at SDCompo that will like this as well, as some of them seem to be all about making organic industrial noise. Your's has that quality, but with more music in it, which is much enjoyable.
