can't stop doing stuff like that. Latest victim is Rihanna

Link: Rihanna - Unfaithful (sas:remix)

Sorry for the rapidshare.com Link, but my hoster doesn't
like remix files. Well... he likes my music, but doesn't want
to run into trouble with copyrighted material...

Tune is a kinda simple made melodic trance thingie.
It was already played in a very small club this weekend
and people were dancing. so it couldn't be that bad.

Have fun and any comments are welcome

SAS

Hey MfM,

nice to read that you like it. Thank you.

I don't like Rihanna that much either, but when i heard
that song first, i thought it could be much better in a trancy mix.
And since the original is at 72 bpm i didn't even needed
to speed it up.

The vocals, well... There's a selfmade a-capella available
in almost all p2p nets, but that one was very unclean
from the first chorus until the end. So i tried it myself again.
All i needed was the original and the instrumental version.
When both are mixed together, with one of 'em inverted,
the chance is pretty good to get the vocals only. Just needed
to tweak the volume and voilá - there were the vocals.

Still not clean, but usable. You'll probably notice some
"rumble" in the background in the section 2:47 - 2:52.
But that's just because i had only mp3's to work with.

Not a bad remix at all

The high hats are bit thin-sounding - imo they need to be beefed up a tiny bit (sometimes a tiny bit of bit-crushing or distortion works wonders!). I would also remove a bit of the reverb on the clap to make it stand out a tiny bit more.

The kick is drowned out a tiny bit by the bass - I would either sidechain it a tiny bit with the kick (or even just automate an EQ to cut the low freqencies with the kick). Alternatively, I'd roll off the bottom few Hz on the bass synth.

Otherwise, it's sounding quite decent - mixdown is fairly good

How many presets did you use this time?

All in all, nice work

Thanks for the tips, maybe i'll try it. "Maybe" because,
i'd probably won't hear a big difference on my headphones

Well.. on the other hand... if you have some time to waste, i'll mixdown each generator and you can give it
a try in mastering. (mastering isn't my strong side)

Ahemm.. presets... almost everywhere, since the main
synth i've used is Hypersonic. Just layered alot in the
Pads ....

MfM, I can't see really what would preclude someone from using Psycle for anything really - sure, for some things it would be EASIER to use another program e.g. with lots of recorded tracks

SAS - I don't really have the time for it right now....but, I would suggest that doing a better mixdown is not as hard as you might think! Sure, to be SUPERB at it it takes lots and lots of practise, but you'd be surprised at how well you can go just by simply placing a parametric EQ (e.g. Nyquist EQ) on each synth and instrument and playing around with each! In my experience, EQ is the major work required - all other things (compression etc) are often just to boost the overall volume of the track without clipping (although compression can be very important with recorded stuff and can be used for other interesting effects).

Btw SAS, I really recommend trying to write something with no presets for once - you'd be surprised at what you can come up with!

That's my goal these days - avoid using any presets whatsoever, which I have done in the last few tracks I have been working on

Well, the music part is completely done in psycle. Same
goes here for mixing and that stuff. I often use Sonar,
but just for mixing and mastering. Dun like Sequencers
at all, but Sonar's Multitrack environment offers great
possibilities for mixing.

Apart from that, Psycle is my one and only.

TranceMyriad:

You know, i'm a damn lazy bastard. And als long as i can
get the sound i want out of presets, i will use them.

Sure, i don't use 'em as they are. I often tweak them, but
i don't have the patience to develop a sound i want from
scratch.

That's not very creative, i know, but i'd rather focus on
production than on twisting knobs.

For mixing:

I think, compared to my beginnings, i've become much better
on that

In the early days, i never cared what it sounds like. I just
made my music and kept all eq stuff in the box.
Today, i hate myself for using those. You can't believe how
much tunes i trashed, just because i didn't get the sound
i want. Sometimes i wish i could make music the same way
i did before.

I'm pretty sure that i don't have those ''Golden Ears'' to
get the best out of my mixes. But when it sounds good
to me, my work is done.

On the other hand, sometimes i'm curious what other
people can get out of it.

Well.. to sum it up: My music is mainly made for me.
If other people like it too: great! Of not - doesn't matter.
All i want is making the music i want to hear. Getting a
great sound, is just the spice in the soup.
And since i have much trouble with my stomach, too much
spice isn't good for me

Enough written

SAS

hehe, fair enough

Mind you, the mixdown isn't TERRIBLE - it's more than reasonable. I was just offering a few 'tweaking'-type suggesions! I've heard supposed 'commercial' tracks with worse mixdowns (which is concerning since they're charging money for them ).

One final word - each to his own! I can understand people using presets - it can be frustrating trying to produce the sound you want sometimes! I personally find it easier to try and produce a sound from scratch - because I find it MORE trouble to search for presets that to try and produce the sound myself!

A second final word (lol) - I would never really look down on someone who uses presets - you can still be very creative!! In the end, it all comes down to whether you as an individual enjoy your own work, as you said!

Njaah.. i don't see your comments in a "look down way".
I was asking for comments and i got them. And i can take
critics - they help me to get better.
Imagine, each and every people always say "Yeah, great
song. I love it! Keep it up!", even you have done the biggest
piece of shit. You'll never get any better. You'd stay on
the same point forever.
That's why i ask for opinions. And i think you know what
you're talking about. So it's no problem
