Pops and "artifacts"        Go on top to this Page

One thing with Psycle and other similar devices maybe is the pops and noises I sometimes get. I have most often associated them with clipping and have been able to reduce them with control of the volume levels. Sometimes they don't seem to be directly related to clipping though, and I was hoping I could get somebody to just expound on that general topic, for my help and maybe that of others. What causes popping noises in Psycle or other apps, and what are things to look for, or to avoid? Any help?

maybe you just have to adjust the latency by rasing the buffers size/number in the settings ?

I think maybe that is not what I am talking about. When I first got this sounndcard I got the kinds of pops that are associated with latency too low, and this is not as bad a noise. I tried raising it today, and it hasn't affected the noises I am talking about.

I think it is a few things, and I am trying to get as much input as I can from anybody that has something to offer, just general tips on how to reduce or avoid unwanted noise from this or other programs.

I think some effects also make unwanted noise more than others, and some do it in combination with other effects, I'm sure. So I just want some general advice if there is any regarding what can cause unwanted noise, and how to avoid that. I am definitely finding these pops as a result of having the volume set too high on a machine, that is a definite one. But that is just one. Do other people use de-esser plugins, other filters for cleaning up during mastering?

I am not saying this is unique to Psycle, that is for sure. But as general advice?

what are your system specs? Have you got a slower CPU that simply may not be able to handle the processing required? Or does this problem happen with programs like Winamp and Windows Media Player as well?

Well, I don't seem to be getting my point across. This is not a latency issue or something like that. This is an issue about effects and machines making unwanted noise, and I am wondering what I am doing wrong, or what I can do to improve this. (This is an adequately powerful computer, 2.4 ghz p4 with 2 gb dual channel ram running W2k SP4.) I think some effects make noise more than others do, and I wonder what anybody else does about this.

It is not about latency, and I am not talking about the kind of pops you get when a computer can't keep up. I am talking about noises that occur when you chain 20 different effects together in the midddle of the night and get some awesome sound you've never heard before, except you get a pop every 8th beat from I don't know where, and a quiet surge of static noise betweeen the 3rd and 4th beat. I am asking you experienced Psyclers what you do about noises you don't want or have a hard time gettting rid of. This may be more of a mastering-related question, really. I think there are several filters and effects designed for this purpose in general, and I use a couple hardware gated compresser-limiters for work for this purpose, for recorded speech. But I just wanted other people's opinions, and I was looking at de-esser effects, for one thing. What do you all use for cleaning up little noises and such from your recordings, or as they occur?

Well, what synths etc are you using? Are you talking about background noise that is present in an original sample, or noise that is produced from particular effects? If so, which effects or synths in particular?

Thanks for responding! ATM 2 instances of Loopazoid with fairly clean drum samples; a generator called Surface makng nice metallic ringing noises, and That's it for generators. I am running Pooplog delay, 2 instances, mgTempodely, 3 instances, Freeverb two, mda limiter, Superstereo, Nilpat, mjRotodelay, endorphin, that's most of it there. I have mostly been able to tweak until I find a spot with no pops or fuzz, eventually. I just wanted to ask if anybody has any tricks or favorite filters that help reduce these noises.

And which machines am I talking about? I don't know, I have been playing with pooplog delay for days now, and still it takes a lot of tweaking to find the "sweet spot." But it is pretty awesome, and so I am still playing with it. It is one of my noise culprits. I think Nilpat too. Of course I really like them both, but I have found it is pretty easy to make some unwanted noise.

So I guess one question on my part is, if I record noises, what do you use in mastering to clean that up? Is a de-esser effect helpful here? Or anything else that comes to mind?

If it's background noise, a noise gate is what you want. If it's other intermittent stuff, you *may* be able to get rid of it with a carefully tweaked multiband compressor, if you can narrow on in the particular frequency (although if you've got other stuff in there with the same frequency, obviously it's going to be altered as well). Also, a basic parametric EQ will do the trick if it IS the only major sound in a that high end frequency range.

Other than that, I don't really have much experience in this area - maybe should ask some people who do a lot of mastering of live recordings or something.
