...just a question...
-You can use only native plugins and samples (is that for all I want or only for drums?)

For samples I think 3MB is a good limit.. Who could fill 3MB with only drum samples ?
If anybody wants only drum samples, so limit would rather be around 1MB (like old compo)
For me, 2 additionnals MB give a goof liberty to include some important loops for the song

MfM's question is important imo. I think only drum sounds (including loops), effects or voices should be included as samples.

Hello, this is _tracker_!
PPL have been using samples of synths for oscillators for ages, what's the point of forbidding it? With 09 you can do some pretty accurate cuts that are hard to achieve with many other platforms?
I thought only melodic loops of synths were forbidden? And what about guitar riffs, etc...?
I say, what the heck, let anything go! I don't think ppl would vote for a track that is made from loops exported from Reason or whatever...

Hm using melodic loop is possible in this compo ?
The 3MB limit is here to prevent from an abusive usage of these nice loops making a Song without working
For me, melodic samples are not forbidden ? ( maybe rules are not clean enough .. I gonna modify it a bit to make it more clear ... if everybody's ok )

"You can use only native plugins and samples (every sort of samples)."
If for some reason I felt like bothering to submit something I've been working on, there might be a little bit of an issue with the above rule. The song uses samples that I made with a VST.
I wrote the patterns for the samples using Superwave, then rendered them and imported them later as samples, because Superwave crashes a lot and I didn't want to use a plug-in. The samples are just like 64-row synth lines. I doubt I'd submit it, but if I did would this be in violation of the rules?
It seems to be half-and-half. I did use a VST to make the rendering of them, but I did end up using them as samples instead of an actual VST.

As long as the uncompressed PSY file is under 3mb, it's good. Somehow I don't think a 64 pattern sample would fit this criteria, and still sound good.
The trick to this compo is using samples EFFICIENTLY. You will still need to use native synths, and you will still need to mess with your samples to save space... But you shouldn't have any problems submitting a sample of a VST.

I'd say let's not get too legal and keep the rules simple... any sample allowed as long as the .psy is under 3 MB would work for me... doesn't matter whether the sample is made by VST, guitar, downloaded, fallen out of the sky, found in an old boot ...
In the end, t's all about having fun

Oh,I think you can insert all you want seraph but you must think about the limit size of 3mb…
So if you insert many sampled loop synths you have no more space for the drums.

....an addiction to the rules...
-a link to the mp3 version of the track should be inserted on the song's description page

yeah, good idea...for those with comptuer that will take ages to render other people's songs .....btw, i hope you mean addition not addiction .... i hope you're not addicted to rules....that's a scary thought!

Alright then. Yeah, the size is a problem...I guess I'll have to cut a couple samples out, so there's not going to be as much variation. I'm told that one of the main things I need to work on a bit in my songs is variation, so I'm not going to like having to cut anything out. I guess I could just have two different versions then, and submit them seperately. One for the compo, one normally. Alright. And yeah, even though it uses samples, it still has a native synth or two or three and native effects. Maybe I'll give it a try then, as soon as I can submit it with a computer that isn't mired in the tar pits of dial-up.

A size saving tip (albeit more work) is to sample a single note then track what you would have looped. Make sure you sample the most "Raw" version of the VST, then pass it through your effects after. This will cut a 1Mb loop down to a series of small samples.
