my compo tune has currently 18 generators and 10 effects, is 8:15 long and still far from being repetitive.
what i need now is a native substitute for my clap sample... any idea?
i already natified the vsts... natifying cheeze machine was the most fun part 
how is your progress going?

Hello boys
I 've just released a new .psy song 100% native with the ultimate limitation...(more limited than "no VST & no sample")
I forget to precise in my submission mail (and in the readme.txt) : play it at 44100.
It's important to precise it with native plugins...
By the way, i don't know if this song will be accepted, i have not respected the duration limit.
And it is very hardcore-limited & conceptual...

Hmm, oh no, all the exams are coming at me like an avalanche here at the uni... Well, I'll just hafta find some time, this is SO cool 
And an idea for clap:
make a sharp noisy filtered "snap"-sound and delay it maybe 3 or 4 times with different plugs and no feedback. Tweak the time & filters and you might get something... I think offsetting the individual sounds maybe +-10ms might do the trick.

I've used M3 to make several sharp percussive sounds, such as snares, hats, etc... An M3 using Noise OSC's with quick Amp env. attack, no Amp env. sustain, and a fairly quick release. Toss that through a 2 pole filter, or a bandpass filter. I'm sure you can get a relatively decent clap sound (or percussive sound to fit)

....i think that for a good song i don't need VST....
....because native plugs are very powerfull!!!
....but...i've a BIG problem with the drum loops....
....i'm searching for a GOOD SNARE!!!!

I am trying to make someone port a drums (kick, hihat, snare,etc...) machine to Psycle, but I'm not sure how much will this take. The intention is to make it avaiable during this month, so it could be used in this compo.
(The person in question is Kile, the member of the demo group that we've teamed up to make the core of Psycle 2, and the machine in question sounds good)

That would be cool, as well as u improve a bit JMDrum synth.... 
Buzz has very good kick synths.
(btw, this boy Kile, is really hard contact with him. i've tried it with no success. Hihi, he knows to be hidden)

I've made snare-like sounds along these lines: noise -> filter -> distortion ->reverb. A slight filter envelope might refine the sound.
It takes some more work to get the bass part in the same generator with native instruments, but you can just use the native kick synth on a different track for that.

yeah, i was going to do a synth pop (joy electric, / new order) sort of track, with 'noise' sounds for the hihat / snare (not bothering to make them sound like 'real' drums - cos they sound cool as they are )
but instead i made this other track, yeah - oh well 
teh up side to this competition (for those who dont like the fact that we're not allowed samples) is that the file sizes will be really small my zip was 5.5 kb i think *oh yeah*

When I read the requirements, I thought to myself, "self, you haven't written an electronic track with no percussion since ... um.. well, it's been a LOOOOOOOOOONG time"
So I decided not to bother with percussion... I've been relying on percussion a lot lately, especially to achieve my progressions. This time I wanted to take a simple sound and make it the rhythmic force in the piece, and build around that like I'd normally build around the kick/snare work.
I ran into a few problems -- first, how do you make a song exciting and driving without making any loud bangy sounds to get the listener to pay attention to what's happenning, and second, how do you make an almost constantly repeating sequence of notes the foundation of a track without making it bore the listener half to death with the repetition.
I think I managed to overcome both hurdles using the same technique: effective sound design. I needed a sound that would be interesting even after a lot of repetition, so I made the sound dynamic -- it changes as time progresses, a simple lfo solved that problem..
But I also wanted the sound to be fairly percussive, so I made sure to use a sound with a good attack. I made the bassline sound percussive as well, and boomy so as to replace a kickdrum without actually saying, "this sound is meant to double as a kick drum" too obviously.
The effect needed to be subtle and effective at the same time.. finding the right balance was a challenge, but I believe I managed to do a good job of it.. at least, it sounds nice to me.. 
I had another goal I wanted to achieve with this song as well -- I wanted to keep the song quite simple in terms of different sounds... I didn't want an electronic orchestra -- more like a string quartet, and if I could add some spice by using the same instrument patches in different ways, bonus.
If I remember right, I used only three generators for the piece -- I used a few more effects, but all-in-all, I think I kept the numbers down considering the sonic richness I achieved with it.
I hope I managed to balance all of my goals nicely. To me, the song sounds simple, elegant, and driving all at the same time. I'm happy with how it turned out, and I for one had a blast with this compo's challenges. =)
I can't wait to hear what everybody else comes up with. Good luck to all -- hopefully this will be as fun as the last one.

I don't know how original my song is going to be, but I've been listening to Jarre a lot lately ;) His older tracks are a perfect example of how to do gripping songs without powerful percussion...
Damn damn schoolwork. Just now, I'd rather be doing my track than evaluating the differences between FSC/PEFC forest certification systems :P But luckily there's still a lot of time...
Hmm, and I already have an idea for the next compo ;)
