Short answer : yes and yes
Long answer : ask bohan ( haven't you already?)

Ps. Long answer is longer, isn't it?

my experience through school, is that if you install MSVS 6 first, and MSVS .NET after it, they will both function normally, but the default app to run if you double-click on a project, will be .NET.

I have successfully compiled Quake 2 under MSVC++6 with only one little hack (adding an assembler compiler, which is required regardless) With Visual Studio.NET 2003 installed.

Of course, the only reason I have the Quake 2 source, is because I wanted to try AAQuake 2 in Linux to see if it really worked. Compiling in Windows was a troubleshooting exercise (It wouldn't compile in Linux because of the Carriage return/Linefeeds still in the text on Linux.)

Oh, and in case you were wondering, AAQuake2 is a really neat thing to see... pretty unplayable, but really neat to look at

Under XP I have had the same experience, msvc 6.0 and .net working independantly, installed 6.0 first - I use .net for mundane projects that don't require any sort of performance, and 6.0 for psycle, plugins, etc. 6.0 still compiles faster code.

You can edit your filesystem to restore the default behaviour to open .dsw files with 6.0. It takes about 5 seconds to do... in explorer, tools, folder options, file types, edit .dsw - pick the right app and away you go.

How come does the older version produce faster code?

Because with Visual Studio .NET, their focus was on the .NET framework, and being able to include unmanaged code with managed code (and vice versa). Basically, Microsoft is sacrificing performance for options.

Yup.

Also, as bohan will happily point out, MSVC 6.0 isn't fully ansi spec. They probably took some shortcuts there as well.

Microsoft? standards compliant???!? Wouldn't that encourage cross-platform programming? I thought their philosophy was to make it easy to have everything ported to Windows, but make it impossible to port from Windows to anything else...

I should add that I only tested .net 7.0 vs 6.0 and not 7.1.
