The 'plugin of the week' thread! | |
Since I'm a freeware freak, I keep diggin' for the 'real freeware vst'. And I've found amazing pieces of software, so far.
I'll try to put some nice progs in here, at a regular basis. And I incourage others to do the same! If you put a plug recomendation here, please add a little description about the soft.
06/07/2007
DiscoDSP HighLife - an amazing drum sampler, with tons of features.
I don't use any drum samplers in Psycle, but many people founds it indispensable. I've tried it a little, and found very stable, cpu light and 'elegant'. So, here's the link:
http://www.discodsp.com/highlife/
PS: forget the 'limitations' described on the (very good) manual.

Since this topic is a sucess of view and critics , here I go again, to bring U another cool plug:
17/07/2007
Dancemaster - an incredible mastering plugin, with the most nice 5-band paragraphic EQ I ever seen. And a built-in limiter and "spatializer"!
The drawback is that this plug is kinda CPU heavy. But, for mastering purporses, I think it's acceptable.

AMVST Freehand - Awesome! A must have of free virtual synths. Yet, I can\\'t understand how this amazing piece o synth is given for free, but anyways, I encourage you all to try it!
Besides the huge number of OSC wave formats (sine, square, etc.) this synth gives you the feature of hand draw (!) your custom formats!!
Take a look at the other synths too.

HAHAHAH!
I will check all these out. I've already been put into some great softsynths here on this forum that I can't imagine being without now.
Speaking of, I will add to this list in case it hasn't already been mentioned (or even if it has!).
H.G. Fortune is becoming one of my favorite softsynth developers with talent for unique and outstanding soundscapes.
There's a link to some free demos. I've been addicted to Protoplasm lately and find myself wanted to use it for texture in every song.
EDIT: Except that ProtoPlasm TSM freezes Psycle I discovered. I was using Protoplasm21.

Thank you all for supporting this thread. I think everyone can come with a totally unknown plugin that will change our lives!
07/12/2007
Rubber Filter - for those of you who want the REAL BRICKWALL FILTER, Rubber Filter is for you. It has all the common filter adjusts, but the main thing about this VST is that it allows up to 384db/octave of "pole adjust". So, you can come close to a vertical line cutoff, that will do wonders in remove all the freqs below/above the cutoff freq.
Also, it have a mono/stereo adjust, and separete controls for each channel. But be warned: this plug isn't recommended for real time tweaks automation during playback. The author recommends a static usage.

Since initiatives should always be supported here are two good free VSTi plugins i didn't see mentioned :
- ShortCircuit is now freeware. It's a very good sampler (i prefer it to Highlife)
shortcircuit all the way ... its a super sampler ... version 2 (though not finished) is much cooler than version 1. and it also uses half the cpu of shortcircuit 1

Basslane - manage bass freqs can be tricky, sometimes (everytime ) Basslane can mono-ize every freqs below a certain threshold.
Sometimes, we have cool FX that mess up the bass/subbass region. If you want to keep your bass clean and tight, but keeping the harming FX for the hi freqs, Basslane is the tool.

OBS. I haven't tested it. Since it's a Synthedit plug, be sure to save your work and make some backups.

OLGA
This is not 'free' but it is available as a full-featured demo. If you love it, buy it.
It is one of the synths used in this current Soundevotion Competition round and most agree that it is fantastic.

EVOL: is a totally rad virtual analog synth. Remember that old strings of 80's music like New Order and that cheesy Eurodance chords of the 90's! Or even some industrial sweeps, blips and robotic synth lines? Yes, Evol can!
Maybe the most underrated synth of all time. State of art Synthedit stuff.
