Automation ... ever coming?

Does anybody know if automation is ever going to be built into Psycle? I've always though Psycle was very nice, but just like with Buzz, I find it rather useless with no automation ...

From Pikari on 11.12.2001, 18:22:

what kind of automation do you mean???

Well, parameter automation obviously? The ability to record parameter changes, or just edit them with envelopes or something? ... LFOs are great fun and all, but they don't do anything for me - I need direct control over the parameters. And no, I do not feel like typing in effect commands to change the parameters - that's just a little too "eighties" for me

TWK and TWF commands work like usual tracker commands and you have to type them, but they are REALLY powerfull !

for example you can twk or twf several parameters of the same plugin at the same time on the same row, and for just one row if you want.

also, if you fill in several rows, combined with ctrl-i (interpolation of data) you can quickly make smooth parameters changing, without having an harassing typing work to do.

also think about the fact you can organize your twk/twf commands as you like, i mean put them wherever you like, on any xhannel you like etc...

but yes, that's true i know it's not like envelopes, and i, for the most part, agree with you

I agree with Mindplay, using tweaking is sometimes too difficult.

Changing parameter values graphically (with lines and dots etc.) would make composing a lot easier. I think it's just "too high-tech" currently, you know, there are many more important things to do and I think it would be also difficult to implement this automation thing in what Psycle is now.

Anyway, maybe in Psycle 3001

in fact thios has been dicussed a lot of times, as far as i can remember, good ideas were brought concerning this, but i think the main limitation is the actual graphic code of psycle...

[JAZ] could tell you more of course

What if you created a block command to "fill in the spaces" in the effect columns. for instance, you plug in "key" tweak commands in the same track. then you select the two key tweaks, with all the space between. right-click and select "fill tweak". This will then fill in the tweaks at even measurements. ie:

twk 03 00 0032
... .. .. ....
... .. .. ....
... .. .. ....
... .. .. ....
twk 03 00 0046

will become

twk 03 00 0032
twk 03 00 0036
twk 03 00 003A
twk 03 00 003E
twk 03 00 0042
twk 03 00 0046

it's kind of a crude workaround, but it should "semi-automate" things a bit, and the math is simple.

you mean a more advanced interpolation (ctrl-i) command fingersoup ?

not a bad idea indeed

hmm yeah, this would save some twk typing time

anyway, I'm still hoping on the vertical-alongtrack-graphics-controller-automation-editor

that's exactly what I'm looking for!

From alk on 18.12.2001, 17:49:

my 2 cents for automation

+ an automation envelope that runs alongside the pattern

+ you can have multiple envelopes at the same time

+ the envelope can be assigned to any parameter of any machine (and can be assigned to more than one param)

+ multiple nodes can be selected and copied and pasted

+ nodes can have linear or curved lines

+ nodes have lfo options

+ at each node you can

- trigger an lfo
- stop the lfo
- adjust the lfo

what dya reckon?

Sounds like a ton of work. Let's be realistic ... I'd be happy with just a simple automation function, synced with the pattern (alongside) as you say. And multiple envelopes, as you say, is an absolute must. I don't see any use for assigning the same automation graph to multiple parameters though? And curved lines would just be a waste of clockcycles - if you want curved transitions, you can draw curves with lines, dig?

From alk on 18.12.2001, 18:14:

>I don't see any use for assigning the same automation

it would be nice to be able to say control the the filter cutoff of two different instruments from the same envelope whatever (obviously not essential but it would be nice)

>And curved lines would just be a waste of clockcycles -
>if you want curved transitions, you can draw curves
>with lines, dig?

heh maybe but I reckon you can afford a clock cyle or two (how many have you, 2 million or so?)

ah, I see - yeah, that would be useful ofcourse

Where have I heard that agument before? no, wait, don't tell me - you're a software salesman for Microsoft, right?

yes please!!!!! tweaking like in buzz

please

nice for filters and cutof and resonance

my 2cents on this subject ( /me trying to avoid the "hard" work )

- Automation needs the following changes in the code:

* Player routines:
Currently, the work divisions are of 256samples, or less. This gives us a precision about 172changes each second. (This value might be more than enough for general usage, but the implementation is just not appropiate)

* File format:
We are going to change it for the new release. File storing way, places, type of data... Just alot.

* Graphics:
Obviously, if you have to automate, you need, at least, to see it! and on the same line, edit it.
Psycle Gui is NOT object oriented. Everything is painted like if it was an old MS-DOS program. This makes adding things difficult, which means adding automation would be the "excuse" to recode this (Which takes many time, when one, as me, is unexperienced).
Just if you ask yourself: The "new" Interface is just a more intelligent way of painting than before.not anything else.

* Mmmmm whatever it should go here, which now I can't think of...

Well.. now, some minutes more of relax, "hard" work tomorrow.

take a look @ aodix!
This is certainly not the most 'modern' way of doing automation but it works like charm!
Psycle could just have a button to open the 'graphic envelope editor' and the ability to create a load of preset envelopes....
And later on it wouldnt be a big deal to trigger them on any param. using some simple commands...
