kick

Does anyone have any good tips on making your own kick drum samples (for goa)? no?

or then links to some kick drum samples which I could modify a little bit. And no, I don't want to use any 808 or 909 samples which 99% of people use..

and what about using DrumMachine in association to the sampler ? This mix can produce very good kicks.

do you mean JMDrum when saying drum machine? I don't like much using it... maybe I can't use it or then it's too simple. (yes, I have achieved to make a few good sounds with it, but they aren't good enough)

in association to the sampler?

hmm..

Usually a trance kick consist of a pitch modulated sinewave or somethin very close to sinewave.

2 usual methods of doing this is to either modulate the pitch of a sine oscillator with a fast envelope, or on on some synths, modulating the filter cutoff of a saw wave, the resonance being set to self oscillation to produce something like a sine wave.

Usually the problem is the envelopes, not many synths have envelopes that are optimised for this kind of use.

In Soundforge it's possible to draw the modulation envelope by hand, this is a great option...

Then you might want to make another "click" sound that's just a high pitched ZAP, that's triggered at the same time than the kick sound. It's better to overlay two sounds like this rather than have the modulation amount so high that the same oscillator does both the high ZAP and the low TUKK, because sometimes on bigger sound systems the delay between the beginning of the kick sound (the ZAP) and the moment when the bass actually kicks in might seem too long.

Also it's a great idea to take a highpassed acoustic drum and overlay it with the synthetic trance kick, so as to give more timbre to the sound. I did this in Korento (check the songs section), and it sounds great in my opinion. (just adding reverb to the synth-kick usually sounds like crap)
The sound should highpassed so that the possible phase difference between the two drum sounds won't cancel each other out...human ears can only perceive this at lower frequencies so just take the BOOM away and it should be OK.

Thanks for advice. I DID read the "how to make a bass drum" text from the infected mushroom site.. but I didn't want to put one of those damn warez CDs of mine into the CD drive to install sound forge. Warez suck.. but.. hmm.. well.

I found three dusted SM-umpimähkä tracks from my HD. Isn't that your group or something? Liked them.

In the old days (way back in the 20th century) some trackers used to use the same kick drum sample simultaneously on 2 different tracks, one played at a half step interval from the other. In some tracking software, alternate tracks were left and right channels, so the 2 out-of-tune kick samples gave a nice stereo thump.
Are you wanting acoustic kick samples? I have some very clean acoustic samples if you would like to try messing with them.

Hmm, gotta check that IM kick tutorial Though I'm not a fan of the music exactly, Erez's stuff is always technically very very very good.

Yes, Summamutikka and Aavepyörä are both projects of me and some friends.

Check out http://avp.greywolves.org for a loooot of oldschool goa & arcade power disco!

I don't like my goa tracks so much, really... They aren't very good, neither technically or songwise. Doing goa is just, hmm, I call it a practise in technical issues
I always wanted to be able to do the same kind of stuff that I can hear on, say, old TIP & Dragonfly comps. Dunno, maybe I'll get to that point some day
The music I _really_ want to do is the "Music of the Spheres". Happy music that makes you feel the "great cosmic love, neverchanging and forever true..."

To capture musically those special moments in life, where everything seems to be perfect and standing still, and you believe- really believe for, that while- that it will always be like that.

I like IM because they mix other genres with goa. they're kinda intelligent intelligent (yes two times intelligent) goa.. though a bit sophisticated (is that the word?.
I think erez has some classical education.

yey infected!!!

the tutorial at infected mushroom's site it great and you can produce real good, punchy sounds with it. all you need is a sinewave
just apply the envelope couple of times, play with it and you will het what you were looking for. i did couple of kicks with SoundForge and they are now the only ones i use!

From Pikari on 03.09.2002, 20:25:

The problem is that I don't want to install that ripped Soundforge I have on a CD.. Are there any (free) wave editors? Someone?

I found a free wave editor off of modplug's site. It is called SoundEngine. I don't really know the pros and cons of it. I was going to use it and then I started messing around with audio/video tapes and stuff. I hope that helps. The link to the file on modplug's site is somewhere in community/reasource files (or links). Yea. Modplug is where I started, sigh.

Pik, I have used CoolEdit96 for a long time, and it is nice solid wave editing software. It has a tone synthesis section, which allows frequency modulation, as well as some very nice effects. It is "free" if you have the registration code

Well, include me as one of the blind. I never even noticed the links page. I guess I do live up to California's stereotype of the dumb blond and palm trees. Eh, oh well.

Seriously, I never looked at the links page for some awful reason. Oh well. Thanks ksn.

HA, damn, I am the most un-attentive person in the world. I don't even remember the structure or how I did anything in my last song.

Hockinfinger, cooledit is not free and if youre using ce96 which is from 1997/96 you should really consider actually buying the thing. The nfo (which is probly Radiums) sez that the release is for evaluation purposes and if youre using the app or making money of it you should buy it.

From Hockinfinger on 10.09.2002, 04:37:

Once again my attempts at being humorous have failed. I downloaded the trial version of cooledit96 back in 1999. When I attempted to purchase the software I was told that Syntrillium no longer supported it. After saving many many pennies ($199.00 worth), I bought Cooledit Pro 1.2 and convinced their nice tech support people to throw in the registration code for Cooledit 96, which I still use more than Cooledit Pro.
I apologize for your inconvenience, and I promise not to attempt humor in any future posts.

I know what soundengine is. I even use it to master all my mp3 songs! Unfortunately it's still pretty buggy (though I should also d/l a new version if there is any) and not good for short files.

I tried to add EQ on kick drum in SoundEngine. I opened the EQ effect window, pushed preview and after a few preview listens the program crashed.. So that's it.

I have CoolEdit Pro crack too on my HD but I don't want to use it because of the reasons JAL7OH mentioned.

I still haven't tried buzz's drum synths. Though the sounds they produce may be pretty widely used.. I want something which EVERYONE doesn't use.

Humor is great, Russian sounds ugly to my ear (sorry ppl) and this was not one of my shortest posts
