  The Phuture of Psycle?

Is Psycle dead? I hope not. Apart from a few bugs (loading swapping samples during playback) Psycle is my favourite tracker on windows. I've tried them all! But to my ears the tracks I make in it, sound the best!
If development has stopped on it... Will I still be able to download it in say 10 years time?

Hello.

I stopped working on Psycle a couple of years ago, partially because I wasn't using it much and because I started helping on an open source DJ software.
Nowadays I don't use Psycle (nor any other music compositing software) and almost don't use the DJ software because I spend my time with my girlfriend.

Some months ago, stefan started commiting changes but they are not on the main Psycle application, but instead it is another refactoring of it, to not depend on the Microsoft MFC library.

About the availability of Psycle, it will keep being available on sourceforge while the site is alive. I had thought about migrating it to Github so that others could more easily fork it and further develop it without needing to incorporate them to the developers.
But that is on hold, because git is not as easy as svn to people that haven't used it. Anyway, it will probably happen at some point.

About psycledelics, we are thinking about bringing it to history ( internet archive). The site code is really old and who knows when it will finally stop working. (We thought that would have happened a couple of years ago, because of an update to the server software where it is hosted)

About using it on the future, most probably the weak point is VSTs. The VST2 technology is legacy and VST 3 is not supported in Psycle.

Probably, we should also store or keep the microsoft vc 2008 runtimes somewhere, because they might stop hosting them because of it being legacy software. (The software could be built with vs 2013, but the plugin projects didn't build correctly the way they were setup)

Thankyou for your detailed answer.
I'll keep using Psycle as long as my computer runs it. I'm a registered Renoise user also, but the stuff I make in Psycle always seems to sound better and I also love the simple interface.
...Anyhow thanks for all the work you and others have done, and good luck for the future.

I already knew it, but after reading the "official" statement, I'm really saddened.

I still use Psycle. A lot. I endure a somewhat problematic computer upgrade and, right now, I'm not using Pyscle as I use to, but I'll be coming back to it soon. I've tried countless music software, but only Psycle "speaks" to me, if you know what I mean. I'm not a musician but Pyscle seems to not care: it just translate my musical thoughs to something listenable (at least I hope so, lol!)

Something that I've wondered all my Psycledelic life: why it never took off, like other tracker software like Renoise and even Buzz, that has a loyal fanbase still to this day. To me, Psycle always had a lot of potential but, for some reason, people just came and went. A shame, but things are as they should be.

As a sugestion, I think it would be cool to have a good set of instructions (specially about compiling and the libraries needed) just in case someone get interested in Psycle development.

Since we can't edit posts in this forum, I think I must respectfuly dispute that:

Taking into account the massive volume of VST/VSTi 2 available, and the fact that most developers/brands still release plugins in VST 2 form, I'm not sure if it's something that's a drawback for Psycle. And I'm sure Psycle users don't have a problem with the software not supporting VST 3. In fact, with the amount/quality of VST 2 plugins available, one can hope for having a virtually infinte palette of tools to produce music for the next 50 years. After all, we have plenty of music studios with analog hardware in their setups still to this day.

And, in my case, I've been using Psycle 1.8.5 since 2007 (13 years) as I think it's the most rocksolid Psycle iteration, at least for my equaly old computer.

I've found something curious about the Visual C runtimes needed to run Psycle:

I tried to install ver. 1.12.2 on a new computer and had the expected error messages pointing the libraries not found. Went to the Microsoft site, downloaded them and... they didn't work!

Fortunately, I had the files posted here long time ago when I tried Psycle 1.12.2 on my old computer, so I found they're different versions from the Microsoft site, even with different file sizes.

It may be really a good idea to have the old files hosted here or on another place so people can have the correct versions.
