  Psycle 1.8.8.beta3 Bug reports

Again I must to thank you both, JAZ & Bohan, for keeping on the good work on Psycle.

I've already downloaded the new beta and (of course) I've started playing with it.

I want to notify some issues that I've observed:
- Knobs skin disappears. I've tested it with example songs. I've configured Psycle with my own skin. I've started opened a song and then I've opened the configuration panel again w/o any modification. Then I've opened another song and sometimes the knobs disappear (blank space). If I turn the knob the corresponding parameter changes as if it was in its place. If I restart Psycle (close & open again), knobs skin showed is the default one.
- The issue with SFZ and multithreading on (2 cores) still persists: Two or more SFZ working instances produce a lot of noise.

And one question:
I've read the whatsnew.txt file to check the changes and I've read this point: "'Skinned' mode for the UI controls, without the need of the manifest file (no more windows 98 look&feel). Several small style changes on the UI."
What does it mean? It is possible to skin the icons? Is related to this change the issues I've observed with the knobs? (Ok, ok... they were 3 questions instead of just one).

Thanks in advance... but I'm still playing with this new version.

Hi. It's me (again).

I've experimented another issue on this release: Psycle freezes when it's not on focus while it is playing a song. I've uploaded a test-song, so please follow this LINK to download it.

In my test I've started a new Psycle session. I've opened the test-song and started to play it. It plays as usually but Psycle does freeze when starts (probably) the third pattern if I have another app on focus and Psycle works in the background. I've tested it while I was surfing with Firefox.

My system is a (-n old) WinXP 32bit. I tested using wave out MME driver and Directsound driver with same results. If I select ASIO driver, the problem persists but Psycle freezes the whole system (so hardware reset).

Hello Angelus.

Thanks for the bug reports.

I will have to investigate this issue about the knobs, since it is something I did not expect. Do I understand correctly that it only happens when you use a customized skin and not with the default one?
It is not related to the "skinned UI" i talked about. *

About SFZ, I can't really fix it, except adding an exception and forcing that plugin to only work in one thread at a time. I believe it shouldn't be too hard to do, so I will take a look for the next release. Anyway, have you tried contacting the developer? Generally this happens because of the usage of static variables instead of instance ones so it is relatively easy to fix on the plugin side.

Finally, about your third (and worse) bug report, It is a problem with synchronization code. You are experiencing a deadlock. I thought i had fixed that before release, but you have provided another place from where it can happen.
The FCxx command triggers a global volume change.
The periodical timer on the UI side then moves the slider in the toolbar. This change sends the cursor focus back to the pattern/machine view, which then verifies that the audio engine is running and resets the sampleRate. The deadlock happens here, because the timer already has a lock on the object that the samplerate change tries to get. I have to place this samplerate change out of this focus function.

*With the skinned UI, i mean that Psycle now uses the XP/Vista/7 look&feel for the components of the window (comboboxes, lists, buttons...), instead of the classic look. Of course, if you have Windows XP with the classic look (as I do in my older computer), you won't see any difference, except for the Font used and a couple of placement changes (like all the audio configuration dialogs).
Btw, there may come more changes on the UI side, like allowing antialias on the fonts in machineview/pattern view.

See the screenshots in http://sourceforge.net/projects/psycle/

I've seen this issue after loading a 3rd-party skin... ok, ok, one of mine. And it only happens on knobs. After it happens if I restart Psycle the visual configuration is conserved except the knob skin, showing the default one.

I.e., Try to reproduce it with this one.

Maybe a hack could be temporary solution. I don't know if SFZ is still in development. It's a free non opensource.

I do understand now. I'll be looking forward for this nice candy-look changes.

psycle won't start at all, no error messages or anything. (computer not on network, installed visual studio runtimes seperately)
I think i saw someone with a similar problem with beta2 and it turned out to be something to do with their processor not supporting sse2 (not sure what that is)

my computer is:
win xp sp3
amd athlon xp 1500+ 1.3ghz

Yes, Athlon XP processors didn't have SSE2.

SSE2 is just a set of processor instructions to speed up floating point operation.

I am still not set on what I will do about this. I don't want to have three compiles of Psycle (SSE x86, SSE2 x86 and SSE2 x64).

So it does only work on newer processors? My PC broke so I'm currently using an very old laptop (Pentium III I think). Psycle does not run, neither Buzz does. SkaleTracker crashes every time I use a VST plugin (CM Studio from one of magazines works fine, but it has its limitations. Not to mention that I don't like its garageband-like interface).

Somebody said he's been running Psycle on a Pentium II @300 MHz. What would be the latest version of Psycle that works without SSL2?

From [JAZ] on 29.03.2011, 22:56:

Psycle 1.8.6 (i.e., the stable release) is distributed in two different buids, one is SSE and the other is SSE2.

In your case the SSE build should work, but I am unsure if 1.8.6 worked on Windows 98. (which i guess it's what the laptop could have).
I know that 1.7.6.2 did, but I'm not sure if newer versions still do.

Different versions can be found at sourceforge:

Ah, I see. I didn't knew about this, so I tried only the latest relase. I'll try it ASAP. Thanks.
Also, I actually run Windows XP on it (It's PIII @800MHz + 512MB RAM). I'm not complaining (that much :-y).

From iLKke on 07.04.2011, 21:36:

I've installed the latest beta in it's own folder which didn't have the default name. Also I renamed the old Psycle installation folder by adding a version number, so there was no longer a default program folder.

This lead to a number of issues. For example, when I opened the prefs dialog, I could not change the theme (only psycle internal was listed), and also when I tried to load a song it was looking for .DLLs in the default program folder. Interesting thing is that my old settings got loaded properly, together with theme, I was just unable to switch it from within psycle as it was obviously trying to find it in the default folder.

As soon as I renamed the folder into "Psycle" everything started working properly.

Seems like default program folder is inadvertently hardcoded into the program.

just checking, did you forget to update the paths on that tab of the settings?

[JAZ]: The problem with SFZ was solved. The bug related to multithread and multiple instances of this VSTi was known. So there was a release with a new version multithread-friendly but it was not official released.

If someone else wants to download it, please follow this link http://web.archive.org/web/2006120604025...loads/freeware/. The latest version was sfz197.zip and must be installed first. Then you have to download the sfz.zip that contains only the new dll that you must to overwrite the installed one with this new version. The problem with multithread will be solved.

Keep on the good work!

Hey Angelus.

Good to know that they fixed it on their side. That simplifies things.

Also, I don't know if you've been following the threads about tracknames and sequence buttons, but if you did, you may have realized that I'm using your beta skin.

In fact, I would be interested in using it as a replacement of the current one for the upcoming release.

I don't know if you've finished making the rest of the changes (adding master machine and changing pattern header). There are more controls to skin if you accept, which are the ones of the send return mixer ( the slider, the check button and the vu-meter).

And If you get motivated enough, the Master window can be reskinned too.

Contact me by e-mail if you preffer.

Hi Josep. I'm pleased to know that you liked the skin. I haven't been able to finish it due to some changes recently in my personal life. But now I have some free time so I could try to finish it. So of course I'll contact you soon.

I recently had to redownload psycle because my computer was messed up in a storm. I tried to start psycle after it was downloaded and an error message came up saying "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect." What do I need to do to fix this? I recently had psycle running on the same computer, so I know it isn't that.

From [JAZ] on 02.09.2011, 18:00:

Does that happen with the official stable release ( 1.8.6.1), or with the new version? (1.8.8 ).

If it is with 1.8.8, have you installed RC1 (link is in the first news in this site), or the older beta?

The message itself means there's some problem with the visual studio runtimes, but i don't know much more about it. The new installer (RC1) has an updated vcredist file, which you might want to install. If you don't want to reinstall using the installer, you can download vcredist from here:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/5...credist_x86.exe

(or this one for 64bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/5...credist_x64.exe )

  Native Instruments VST

I've a few problems.

I use NI stuff all the time, and I love trackers. There are two problems at the moment that I've identified.

1. Massive - It just crashes as soon as I switch instrument.

2. Kontakt 4 - Does not load sample libraries on start up, it needs to purge them, and reload on every instance of it once you've loaded the song.

How can I help you to fix this?

Kris
