confusion

new to the making your own music thing, but so far the other programs i've tried were really ridiculous but this one i'm understanding pretty good... my only two questions are this...

1. How do you work the sampler? I took the tutorial and i loaded my WAV song but, how do i get it to the screen where you type in notes? and how does it work? can you like pick a part from it you want to play? I'm kinda lost there.

2. I've been downloading a bunch of VST's but im lookin for some really cool steel drums... Something that you might hear in a Skinny Puppy song... ne recommendations?

Hi Fat_Tone420 and wellcome. I hope you'll enjoy Psycle as all of we do.

I suggest you to go to this site (if you don't already know it):

http://www.hammersound.net/

and click on "sounds" in the left menu, and "SoundFont Library" in the new page. Select Percussive soundfonts and look for steel drums. There are really cool banks for free. You can play a soundfont bank using a VST sampler like SFZ from RGCaudio (http://www.kvraudio.com/get/769.html).

Another cool site for free soundfonts is:

http://www.sf2midi.com/

Enjoy... and don't forget to share your productions.

Now yer talking. And if you just want to trip out and play, then bear in mind that you can just play with Psycle and record what yer doing and just use it "live." You don't HAVE to use it for writing .psy files, it works as a live vst host. Just remember to record what you are doing. I use Tapeit VST to record.

.........

The problems with vst's are twofold. One is there are so many of them you may never get to focus on what you set out to do because there's so many things to try. The other is that some (many) of them will crash your vst host (Psycle) or your whole computer (esp. ones made with Synthedit. The Psycle dev'ers are working on that, as are the dev'ers for all the other vst hosts.)

For steel drums, try DMI Hammer vst. And I have dl'ed 2 vst's named Surface and both might be of some interest for you. They both have serious trippability. Go to kvraudio and do the vst search. Search for "steel drum" and jus tsearch for vst's named "surface."
