Yes, it's RC, but it's *the* release candidate.. technically, as it's 1.8.-1 (minus one), aka "1.8.i^2 codename imaginary", or even 1.8.65535 due to wrapping when you see the version info properties in explorer, we won't be able to create an intermediate 1.8.-0.5 version... or, erm, are we that insane?

If we wait for psycle to be totally bugfree before releasing a first "1.8" version, it will never happen... I think those version numbers are, well, just numbers in the end.

I'd prefer we call the next versions 1.8.0, 1.8.1, etc, that is, using the last number for bugfixes, rather than 1.8RC2, 1.8RC3, etc... because we can't predict what version will be "1.8 final", or in other words, there never is a final version. We can still patch 1.8.x for bugfixes while 1.9.x is being developped, and with internet being widely used nowadays, everyone can easily check for available updates.

jaz did some hard work in polishing things so that upgrading from older versions work fine... so that's why i think it's no problem if it's distributed more widely than 1.7.x alpha... it doesn't have blatant bugs that will trash all your work.

btw, don't overwrite files of your existing install with files from this new version. It's preferable to unpack the new version in another dir, and use it from the new place. You can still use old versions at the same time, but you'll probably be fine with this new version :-)

The official "pack" isn't built yet... Nothing is uploaded yet in the "files" section at sf.net/project/psycle. In the files section at psycledelics, the stable link still points to 1.7.6.2, and the Release Candidate link points to the release candidate at psycle.sf.net, which is a mix of 1.7.6.2 and 1.8, not a completly upgraded one:

What lack in this pack are the newly built plugins... there are still some little things to cleanup and check concerning them. So, if you (anyone :), download this pack, you will not get the latest plugins. Appart from the that, the rest of the pack is up to date with the current state of the source code repository.

____________________________

PS: about the plugins, concretly, we have to wait for voskomo to release the final blitz plugin (or we have to remove it from the pack since the current version of blitz in the cvs isn't final), move druttis and pooplog plugins out of the "closed-source" dir (ideally they would be in the cvs too!)... also, jaz said there is a problem with the newly compiled phantom... to be continued... this should be fixed /checked for a real complete "stable" 1.8.0 pack.

ok, comments on RC 1.8.-1 1.8:

new default native skin looks cool - a little hard to read but i'm sure plenty of people will come up with nice alternatives - it would be nice to be able to select them separately from an overall theme i.e. have a listbox the same as for machines and headers

when i first started up and hadn't loading all my old skins or any of my files, i added some VSTs and native generators. When i tried to clone them i got the message "cloning failed" or something similar....i haven't been able to duplicate the error again, unfortunately...

and what's this about your "title" function - how does it work? Does it have to be programmed into the plugin or is there some way of customising it?

and sampulse is looking good, can't wait to see it up and running after 1.8

good work devs!

It's programmed inside the plugins themselves. Only few of them make use of it, haas, and blitz. Some pooplog plugins did already use those "separator" parameters, but they had no text, so there's no visible label. Since we have the sources, we could had some titles.

Thank you, and good work! Upgrading went smoothly. It still seems to run on Win98SE as well, which is excellent More testing to follow...

That's why i am labeling it 1.8 and not 1.7 anymore. Ideally, i would have labeled it 1.8, but we really need this version as to be used and see what is problematic. By the way, this post is serving its purpose. Thanks.

I suppose you didn't forget we have a HARD work to do after the *real* 1.8, do you?

Once we found that this happened when the default song dir was incorrectly set and/or unexistant. This could be the reason why it only happened at the beginning.

The "good looking" part is the instrument tab, which isn't present yet

Good to hear both things.

@everyone else: 1.8 (final) will be this RC, plus the compiled plugins, plus what it comes out of this short test.

One more thing to wait for to be able to make a complete pack: TranceMyriad's help file :-)

From fiasko on 14.07.2005, 02:07:

it's looking good. Stability is much inproved

suggestion: increase effect number to 256 (i just filled all 7f slots) and add ctrl+shift+s for save as.

just a very small thing: the ./doc/ links in help section doesn't seem to work...

everything else feels smooth

From TranceMyriad on 15.07.2005, 00:00:

@outsider: i think it's to do with your directory settings, if you use the default ones i think it works....but don't quote me on that lol...anyway hopefully you won't need them because it'll all be in the help file which i will have completed hopefully within the next few days...

TranceMyriad

i thougt about it, your help file will replace the need of those docs... anyways, just for the record, the directory in which i extracted the RC it's entirely -just as provided- within the last stable directory... that being like 'C:\etc/psycle/psycle-1.8etc.'

Sorry about it taika.

Please run the Release Candidiate version instead (1.8.-1)
Blitz isn't officially released yet by voskomo, so, it's been removed from the 1.8.-1 pack. it will be in the 1.8.0 one hopefully.

BTW: where is you ninja pic?

Hmm the ninja pic was seized by the elders of the clan, they were verty angry for revealing my secret identity... Ehh I mean, we got a new server provider and that wasn't one of the things I cared to transfer

Just a few things about 1.8-1

I want to thank Jaz again for the note duplicator, this is just SO 1000% cool, now ANY synth can have layers together. The transpose option is a nice and very useful detail.

MIDI with VST FX plugins seems to work now? I was playing around with Vokator and it works like a charm! IIRC there were some issues with this before.

Psycle still sometimes crashes when I add a new plugin when scanning, and afterwards still continues to crash even if I remove that plugin. And then it's a lot of work to move plugins around until I manage to get past the scan phase and back to the original setup. But I have a lot of stuff installed, this might not be such a big issue for most users...

From BJohan on 18.07.2005, 03:09:

voskomo commited new versions of blitz and gamefx to the cvs, and they are available in the lastest alpha build

about crashes during scanning, i think in the end, the scanner should really be running in a separate process so no external dll code can blast the psycle process itself... no matter what error handling we put in the host, a dll can still do anything like exiting the process, without giving hand back to the host, or writing random bits to the parts of the memory that belong to the host. i'm not really confident about linking and unlinking hundreds of unknown dlls coming from such an anarchic incompatibility mess as the way softwares and cornflakes are distributed thru your windows, like, having different versions of microsoft's msvcr*.dll or msvcp*.dll, of borland's bcw*.dll or intel's whatnot*.dll so-called runtime libs, this might be the true cause of the mandelbugs, or maybe all those plugins put together simply constitute enough of a radioactive core as to cause software rot, i don't know, and well, even if there was a way to know, which i doubt, i just don't want to know.

Anyway, one advice is to always save before doing a scan, and restarting psycle after, even if successful, just to give it a better karma...

taika, when this happen, isn't there's any info in psycle.plugin-scan.log.txt?

From Sanne on 18.07.2005, 18:47:

1.8-rc uses 30% cpu when idle

Hi all,

I'm a new Psycle user for some days now, thanks very much for this fine program.

I noticed that on my system Psycle 1.8-rc uses about 30% cpu even when sitting idle. I tested under Win98 SE with this build:

psycle.mfc.bin.timestamp-2005.07.11..0.23.36.45

I used Proccess Explorer from Sysinternals for monitoring cpu load.

The older Psycle releases I still have lying around from my irregular Psycle testing phases in the past (1.6, 1.7.4, 1.7.6.2) don't show this behaviour, they all display an idle cpu load of about 5 to 6%.

When running Psycle under Linux/Wine I also get 30% idle cpu load, but for both 1.8-rc and 1.7.6.2. Funny thing is here, when I drop down a menu, the cpu load drops to about 5%.

I hope this info is useful for the devs.

Sanne
