There's a post on the boards somewhere that answers your question. I'd point you to it, but I can't find the search function of this forum.

What it does is when you share a song with your friend, but he doesn't have a particular plugin it will be replaced by the dummy plug.

Another example is the limit of generators and effects that can be connected to the master (somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I think it said this in the other post). You can reduce this number by using dummy plugins (though a gainer is better).

Yes. The internal dummy plugin was created to replace non existent machines when loading a song. But it can be used to group machines too. Though prolly the gainer is a better choice. Currently the limit of machines that can be directly connected to the master is 12.
