  VSTi Host troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have something a bit bizarre happening here, and can't really seem to troubleshoot my problem correctly.

I have Pro Tools LE, and I'm using Psycle as a VSTi host.

I have 8 VSTi's from Computer Music Magazine loaded up, and "hooked up" to the master. I'm using Sonic Foundry's virtual MIDI port, and a Nord Lead 2 as a controller synth, running through a USB Midisport 8 x 8 /s.

I can play one VSTi at a time, or more accurately, when I choose a VSTi from the drop down list, I can play that synth, but *only* that synth.

It seems that Psycle is capable of playing all 8 instruments on 8 seperate channels, but this is not the case.

The Midi Monitor shows only Recieving Midi data, and thats it. No other information, synths, etc ., is available.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help...

MIDI, in psycle, can be interpreted in two different ways, driven by a midi keyboard, or driven by a sequencer.

This setting can be changed in settings-configuration, in the input-output tab, named :
"Enabled: sequenced with midi commands. Disabled: used with midi keyboard".

When it is disabled, it works manually, that is, selecting the generator to use and playing just that. This works well to record to pattern as well.

When enabled, you can use all of the 16 midi channels, but you have to setup it with MIDI commands. It is this way because it was originally made to sequence psycle with a software sequencer, like cakewalk.

The explanations of how to use it in this mode are in the "Docs/Midi Input Docs" folder. There you'll see what you need to send from your synth. (If that is possible).

Basically, you have to set the program for each midi channel, (which identifies the generator to be used), and then all is controlled sending messages to them (the channels).

Well... still having problems.

I set up Pro Tools with the Hubis virtual midi interface. As far as I can tell, Psycle doesn't like the Sonic Foundry virtual midi interface.

If I disable Psycle, I can control Psycle with Pro Tools, but I'm down to one synth again. If I enable Psycle, I get nothing.

I tried different outputs for the sound as well, but still got the same results. I even tried the Psycle synths, and that didn't work.

I have to admit, I'm a bit stumped here.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: It does not work with DirectSound! (I think it works with ASIO, but I can't confirm)

Ok, i got it working finally. I did this:
(using fruityloops as sequencer, an imported midi file, and Midi yoke as a virtual port)

In psycle:

*Set midi input device and midi sync device to the virtual midi port.
(*optionally, lower the midi headroom. lowest value is 5ms)

*Enable the setting.

*Create several machines and connect them to master.

In sequencer:

* Select midi output and master sync to the virtual midi port.

* Enable master sync.

* Set the program number of a midi channel to a valid Psycle machine. If you're using a sampler, the instrument will have to be selected too, and this is done via the "CC 0" command.

At this point, psycle should show you that you've made that selection. if not, the problem is already there.

* Finally, start the sequencer, and notes should be going to psycle.

Note that by default, note offs are ommited, and "CC 125 127" has to be sent" to enable it.

I hope that we will have time in the near future to improve the way MIDI is working, improving the usability.

I have the same difficulty when using Psycle with a sequencer. You write:
* Set the program number of a midi channel to a valid Psycle machine. If you're using a sampler, the instrument will have to be selected too, and this is done via the "CC 0" command.

How can you do this?Psycle shows only one generator at a time and it does not appear in the midi monitor.
Thank you if you take the time to reply.

your sequencer should have a "event list" box or something of that nature. in that box you can put cc (continuous control messages) directly. I'm pretty sure if you had a midi controller or some midi keyboard you could probably set the modulation wheel or something (if you have more knobs like on an m-audio oxygen to deliver cc messages, but I haven't tried it so i don't know if it would work in this capacity.

Eh.... I thought that Psycle could run as a VST instrument, and the master signal go trought my favorite Sequencer.

Is that possible?

Not.

Would be nice indeed!
